While passing through the toy department at Target, I saw a girl who couldn’t have been older than 6 throwing a tantrum over something that looked like a Barbie - esque representation of a street walker. I later found out that these are the popular “Bratz” dolls. In my opinion, not only is this doll enforcing bad spelling, but telling girls at an even earlier age that they are *** objects. I’m not a parent, and don’t claim to understand being a parent, but I can say that I would not buy a hooker doll for my kid. What do you parents think? Do you buy Bratz for your kids?
I study fashion at Parsons, and these dolls do not reflect fashion. Maybe if you went to a strip club the dancers would say the dolls reflect fashion, but anyone who knows anything about fashion knows that these dolls are just skanky.
I only asked this question b/c I grew up with Barbie, and I do feel like she was a good role model. I also used to love dressing up like my Barbie doll, and I remember they sold tons of cute sparkly pink stuff for kids based on Barbie clothes so I could. What would kids wear to look like their bratz? Fishnets and stripper heels? Lipliner? Free baby sized condoms?

April 1st, 2009 at 10:13 pm
they look like miniature tramps. but i do buy my girls the bratz with pants on
April 4th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
I’ve seen those nasty things, and won’t buy one for my granddaughter. You’re right, they look like hookers! Ye gods!
April 8th, 2009 at 12:00 am
not a parent but showing images of girls dressed like ****** cannot be a good way to bring up a girl can it?
April 8th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Ah yes…Bratz…very trashy.
April 8th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
I don’t think I would, they are kinda ****** for a girls doll.
April 11th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Bratz are a big no no for my 6 year old daughter. it teaches girls that this is they way you should dress to be accepted. It promotes wrong self image and I will not contribute to that. The look like little ****** to me.
April 12th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
i would never
April 15th, 2009 at 6:44 am
I wouldn’t. They have big heads.
Also, they look like *****.
April 16th, 2009 at 9:44 am
I think they are so ugly.
I don’t have kids, but I’m not buying those things when I do.
April 19th, 2009 at 2:34 am
Where is the “Pimpz” male version. This is really Hood Rat Barbie.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:30 am
Nope, and for all the same reasons you said. Playmobil for life! My kids played with the Playmobil stuff until they were about 11 or so. Bratz are just…yucky if you ask me >.>
April 21st, 2009 at 4:32 pm
No way. There such a bad example for little girls, they show there bellys, and differnet parts of there body, that isn’t the best way. there just like hooker dolls, and the name “bratz” enforces little girls that it’s ok to be a brat, when it’s not. I would sue the company if I could. and i’m not even 20.
April 23rd, 2009 at 10:41 am
I don’t like the Bratz dolls.
April 26th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
I will never buy a Bratz doll for any child of mine. I will never dress a child up like that, and I look down on parents that would.
April 30th, 2009 at 6:39 am
My daughter loves Bratz, but she dosen’t go out and try to dress like a hooker because of the doll. I think that they are harmelss. Thats like not letting a boy have toy guns or G.I. Joe for fear that they may think that it is ok to really shoot someone.
May 2nd, 2009 at 9:18 am
I saw these dolls all over the place last Christmas! I don’t have kids, but my sister who works at Target says that parents would go crazy trying to get the latest Bratz dolls and accessories for their kids. I was suprised because I feel the same way you do! If I had a daughter, I would not buy her a hooker doll!
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:27 am
I do buy Bratz for my daughter.
May 6th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
In my opinion barbie is the exact same thing.
I dont think that they are that bad but they are creepy their feet come off.
May 7th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Bratz is just another way of destroying our youth, this is not something that any parent should ever buy for their children, unless you are asking to have a real brat, and a ****** daughter. Barbies at least had taste at some point, now they want to shove skanky little tantrum throwing dolls in our kids faces, and parents are buying this crap up, that is the sad thing.
May 10th, 2009 at 7:21 am
What you have to understand is that it is really trying to show fashion in my opinion. Your taking it the wrong way. I would buy bratz for my daughter.
May 12th, 2009 at 2:22 am
It seems you might be one of those parents later on that is over dramatic, calm down they are toys that they play with, its not like a movie where they actually see girls DOING bad things,so yea why not
May 13th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
no simply becuase i despise Bratz, my favorite toy when i was young was my pocohontis doll, (now that was a roll model )
May 15th, 2009 at 5:59 am
My sister-in-law to be buys the whole line for her children. I think it’s ridiculous.
You are correct : it teaches terrible morals!!! But so do most toys I see around these days, for young girls especially. I am not a parent, but I can only imagine how difficult it is to pick out acceptable toys for your children. Especially considering that your child’s friend, probably has the same toys you are trying to keep away from them. How do you explain to a 7 year old, that they can’t have it because it’s too risque, when they don’t even know the concept yet….. it’s tough.
May 15th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
My daughter is 6 years old and loves Bratz. I made a decision not to buy the regular Bratz dolls, but have gotten her the baby or youth ones because they are not in short skirts and don’t have as much make-up on. I agree with some of them looking like hookers!
May 18th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I don’t have a daughter yet, but I still think those Bratz dolls are awful!!!
I hope it’s not fashionable anymore when my daughter gets old enough… Not only are they trashy but they are “fashion victims”, which means they are a symbol of that whole consommation culture… Nahhh ugly little ***** doll!

I don’t know. I have two boys that don’t play with those. I am pregnant and might be a girl but would know. My niece has those and she 9 now. I think she got them when she was 7 or 8 but can’t remember. I believe my brother got them for her christmas gift one year. I don’t know for sure I would let her get them or not.
May 20th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
As a parent its your job to teach your kids ryte from wrong and let them know what is and isnt appopriate i agree that these dolls could be sending out a bad message but again they are just dolls for children. Just because they see a doll dressed one way doesnt neccessarily mean they would want to dress the same they make clothes for kids with the bratz dolls on thenm and children think they are being dressed like theyre toy im not so sure i would let my daughter play with the dolls unless she knew the diffrence between dressing up a doll and dressing herself
May 21st, 2009 at 12:29 pm
well i dont have kids…but my dad bought me some when i was 12yrs old..but i got bored of them so i gave them to the thrift store…NO i wouldn’t buy those kinda of dolls for my kids when i have them because those dolls are ***** and make little girls think thats its ok to dress like that when its really not
May 22nd, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Thankfully I am not faced with this either as I have two boys - but it really does portray an awful image!
The things that annoy me with my boys is how knives and guns are the main things being aimed at boys - They wonder why knife and gun crime is on the increase! Maybe they should look towards retailers!
May 25th, 2009 at 10:25 am
I don’t see why I wouldn’t. Of course I don’t want my little girl trying to mimick short mini skirts and leopard print, but it’s about fashion. They go alittle heavy on the make-up, yeah, but one of them is wearing capries and a jacket with cowboy boots. It’s just dress up.
May 25th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
I cannot imagine a mother buying one of those hooker dolls for her child, bad parenting if you ask me
May 28th, 2009 at 4:27 am
Thank God I have boys, no I wouldn’t. I also expressed an issue to a friend who has a young daughter regarding the clothes out there. Hootchie mama clothes on kids is asking for a *******..
May 31st, 2009 at 6:03 am
No I think they are dressed way to **** and wear too much makeup.
June 2nd, 2009 at 12:31 pm
no, never
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:51 am
Not much of a fan of Bratz. The way they characterize these dolls make it seem like its ok for a child to play like this, dress like this and well….become like this. Which in all isnt appropriate for a child who becomes interested in anything that comes its way. I personally do not have children but I have a few younger sisters. They get easily influenced media, even dolls. I’m sorry to say this, but any parent who buys their daughter this, is sending the wrong image to them. Not only that, but the manufacture is selling that these items are selling so they will keep producing them….not helpful!
June 4th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
My daughter is only 8 months but NO NO NO I would never buy these dolls for her,I will stick to the classic barbie dolls that aren’t so trashy.
June 7th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Bratz (obviously coming from the word brats) is merely a trademarked name designed to get a buyers attention with a cute twist on spelling. its not teaching incorrect pronunciation. its a brand. the dolls are not representative of hookers. not in any way. they are designed with fashion trends in mind. barbies have short skirts as well.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
No we do not buy Bratz dolls for our daughter. I think they are ugly forms of Barbies. Little bodies and big ol heads..eww..LOL..
June 12th, 2009 at 10:32 am
No I agree they are ****** dolls that send the wrong message. Girls will want to dress like them!
June 12th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Absolutely not and I’m no prude. I’m a pretty “cool” mom who is open-minded about a lot of stuff and I don’t believe in sheltering my kids from the world, however these Bratz dolls are ridiculous. They serve no purpose but to distort our kid’s views of what a girl looks and should look like. I know alot of other mom’s who don’t agree w/ the Bratz dolls either. Whatever happened to Barbie and Skipper in their little matching dresses? I guess that’s ‘lame’ now. I’d honestly rather my kids play w/ this:
June 15th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
I don’t but for a different reason!
I don’t like the idea that they are called Bratz, because I would not want my daughter having a Brat as an idol.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Yes my daughter love them (thumbs down me if you like) but these dolls are supposed to be teenagers and aimed at older girls, so yes my daughter is 10 and loves them, Now Barbie is aimed at younger girls and always has been, but as i say these dolls are very popular if you don’t like them you don’t have to buy them, and yes my daughter has the one with the blue base Chloe !
June 21st, 2009 at 4:37 am
Even my 6 year old Daughter when passing by these in the stores will glance at them and shake her head and say, “That is so wrong Momma”. Anyone with any brains would see these are inappropriate for any child. They do look like hookers.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:17 am
Okay, well I am not a parent, however I know what you mean because my neighbours have quite the collection of Bratz and Barbies. Both dolls are the same kind of unrealistic image, however most of these girls who have the dolls also watch the Barbie movies and Bratz shows. While babysitting my neighbours I have on different occasions watched both and they are very innocent shows. So pretty much, I think that those dolls are fine for playing with, so long as the parents make it clear that women are not *** objects
June 27th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
No, I don’t.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:42 am
it is a newer version of a barbie and i had tons of them when i was a kid and i turned out to be a respectable woman, so as long as i raise my daughter the right way and teach her to respect her self and others i don’t see why not.
